Plasma and LCD tv’s have been labelled as energy guzzlers, outdoing the trusty refrigerator by a long shot.
Would you give up your big screen tv to protect the environment?
Or should we have energy ratings on the televisions?
Would this change your buying behaviour?

how much energy dose a plasma use
I at least want to know how much it is going to cost to run the TV for the next 5 to 10 years.
I was amazed how difficult it was to get information on energy use. Without Energy Star Ratings on TVs, then you have to hunt high and low on manfacturer websites or use comparison.com.au to compare Plasma and LCD TV energy use!
They may use more power than a fridge but how many hours do you spend watching your fridge?
The point about LCD TVs is that they are much cheaper to run than a standard CRT TV.
Hi Jeremy,
thanks for your comment. I don’t watch my fridge, but it is on 24/7 - whereas most TVs aren’t. Tests carried out by Energetics have shown that one Plasma TV uses as much power as a fridge with a 4-star energy rating. The bigger the screen the more power the TV uses and the brighter the picture, the more energy used. The old fashioned CRT TVs use much less power than the plasma. As for the LCD, I know they use much less than a plasma, but evidence shows they still use more than CRTs. Read my article about the difference between Plasma, LCD and CRT TVs here.
But the big question is - do you care how much energy your TV is using Jeremy? And would your TVs energy usage change your choice of TV.
